Goddess Mahalakshmi (or Mahalaxmi) is identified as as a deity of beauty, good luck, power, wealth and abundance. She is worshipped on Diwali and Navaratri.
Goddess Mahalakshmi is the consort of Lord Vishnu. She is the sister of goddesses Mahasaraswati and Mahakali. She is known to have killed the demon king Mahishasura, who took several forms as animals but finally succumbed to the overwhelming strength of goddess Mahalakshmi.
Symbols of Lakshmi:
Usually depicted either standing or sitting on a pink lotus with approximately 1000 arms each holding weapons and other miscellaneous objects.
She is always accompanied by elephants throwing water from urns on her as a mark of respect for the goddess who emerged from the churning of the oceans by the gods and demons.
She is also many at times seen riding an owl who is her main vahana apart from the elephants.
The picture - gold coins raining down from one of the right hands of the goddess - depicts that she is giver of wealth to the people not only in India but all across the globe.
